Super excited to have my first “one-man show” coming up at the historical 29 Palms Art Gallery! The show starts Thursday January 6, 2022, and runs thru Sunday, January 30 and is called simply “Time”. Photographic prints are nearly two-dimensional with very little physical depth. “Time” attempts to add the 4th dimension of time using several different methods.
Some pieces are blends of two exposures of the very same scene in which I set up the camera on a tripod nearly all night long, trained on my composition with the intent of photographing daylight on the foreground, then a night version of the scene for the stars. I combine the two exposures in Photoshop and thereby eliminate the need to use artificial lighting. I call the result “one scene, one day, two moments.”
"Relativity"
One of those photographs incorporates an element of time I really hoped to avoid that particular night, cloud motion over time. The intent was to capture the Milky Way, but it became a stars and cloud composition which continues to grow on me.
"Sky Dial"
Another method by which I present time is by creating a visual distinction between the relative age of objects, beyond that which nature shows us. In some cases, I keep a living object such as flowers in color, and turn inanimate rocks, and dormant or deceased trees into a black and white background. The most time-consuming was “Color Fuel”, recipient of 2nd place Photography award at the 2020 Joshua Tree National Park Council of the Arts Expo. To preserve color and detail across the tonal range (bright sky and dark foliage presented exposure challenges), I shot multiple exposures at different shutter speeds, then blended them in high dynamic range (HDR) software. I then selected the colors I wanted to “keep”, turned the image black and white, then added the color back over the black and white version. When I zoomed in on the original color again, I realized there were many small patches of lichen, and I really like lichen. That began the tedious process of erasing the black and white version to reveal lichen color, but not rock.
"Color Fuel"
Two prints will have smaller companion pieces that show in one case the same scene 2 ½ years later, to show you what has changed, and 3 months apart in the other pair, to show you how time and timing really affect mood.
You may preview most of my “Time” exhibit in my “Time” gallery. The metal prints will range in size from 16x24 to 30x45. But not everything on the site gallery is in the show.
Opening reception is scheduled for January 8 from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m., subject to change, so check Upcoming Exhibitions to verify as the date approaches. My plan is to be at the gallery each Saturday in January. Hope to see you there.
The 29 Palms Art Gallery is located at 74055 Cottonwood Dr, Twentynine Palms, CA, and open 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Thursdays-Sundays.
